Space breathing breakthrough? new study tests ventilation gear in zero gravity
NCT ID NCT07435389
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study will test how well different breathing devices work in the weightlessness of space, using special airplane flights that create short periods of microgravity. Twelve healthy volunteers will try a standard oxygen mask and two types of non-invasive ventilation masks while floating. The goal is to find the best way to help astronauts breathe if they have respiratory problems during space missions.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
non-invasive ventilation devices (T1 ventilator with BiTrac mask or CaStar UP helmet) and standard oxygen therapy
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward better breathing support for astronauts during space missions.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early exploratory study with only 12 healthy volunteers, so results may not apply to real spaceflight or sick individuals.
