New monitoring tools could predict who needs a breathing tube
NCT ID NCT07423338
First seen Feb 28, 2026 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 11 times
Summary
This study looks at whether two safe, non-invasive tools—ultrasound and electrical impedance tomography (EIT)—can help doctors see how well the breathing muscles are working in patients with acute respiratory failure who are on non-invasive support like CPAP or high-flow oxygen. Up to 100 adults will be monitored at the bedside over 72 hours. The goal is to find out if these tools are practical and useful for guiding treatment decisions, potentially helping to identify patients at risk of getting worse earlier.
