Can lifting weights protect transplanted kidneys?
NCT ID NCT07370727
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a 12-week supervised strength training program, done at different speeds, can improve kidney function and metabolic health in people who have received a kidney transplant. Twelve adults aged 18-50 with stable kidney function will be randomly assigned to one of two exercise groups. Researchers will measure changes in blood markers of kidney health, cholesterol, blood sugar, and waist size.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Velocity-based resistance training (exercise program)
What this could lead to
If this works, it could show that a specific type of strength training helps protect kidney function and reduce heart disease risk in kidney transplant recipients.
What could go wrong
This is a very small early trial with only 12 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Exercise may not improve kidney function as hoped.
