Nerve block showdown: which injection eases lung surgery pain best?
NCT ID NCT07650877
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial compares two ultrasound-guided nerve blocks—the rhomboid intercostal block and the serratus posterior superior intercostal plane block—for controlling pain after video-assisted lung surgery. Ninety adults undergoing elective VATS will receive one of the two blocks, and their pain scores at rest and while coughing will be measured over 24 hours. The goal is to determine which block provides better pain relief and may help patients recover faster with less need for strong painkillers.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- local anesthetic (bupivacaine or similar)
- What this could lead to
- If one block proves superior, it could become the standard for pain control after video-assisted lung surgery, reducing opioid use and speeding recovery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-center trial comparing two similar techniques. The results may not apply to all patients or hospitals, and neither block may be clearly better.
