Could a simple ultrasound spot hidden depression in gut patients?
NCT ID NCT07319338
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study explores whether routine blood vessel tests can help identify depression in people with chronic atrophic gastritis, a stomach condition. Many patients with this disease have undiagnosed depression due to stigma. Researchers will use ultrasound and other vascular measurements as objective markers to flag those needing mental health support. About 520 adults across four Chinese hospitals will take part, aiming to make depression screening less subjective and more acceptable.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a stigma-free, objective way to screen for depression in routine gastroenterology care, improving mental health referrals.
What could go wrong
This is an early observational study, not a treatment trial. The vascular biomarkers may not accurately detect depression, and results may not apply to other settings or populations.
