Twin pregnancy mystery: could vaginal microbes predict early delivery?

NCT ID NCT06053697

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looks at the tiny organisms living in the vagina of women pregnant with twins to see if they are linked to preterm birth. Researchers will take swabs and blood samples from 120 women at different points in pregnancy. The goal is to find clues that could one day help predict and prevent early delivery in twin pregnancies.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this research could help identify which women with twin pregnancies are at risk of preterm birth and point toward new ways to prevent it.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study with only 120 participants, so results may not apply to all twin pregnancies. It looks for clues, not treatments.
