New hope for EoE patients? drug trial targets those failed by steroids
NCT ID NCT07588568
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether upadacitinib, a drug already used for other conditions, can help adults with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) who still have symptoms despite using topical steroids. Over 12 weeks, 52 participants will take either upadacitinib or a placebo, then all will receive upadacitinib for another 12 weeks. The main goal is to see if the drug reduces inflammation in the esophagus.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
upadacitinib (RINVOQ)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new treatment option for people with eosinophilic esophagitis who don't get better with current steroid therapy.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 52 participants. It may not show a clear benefit, and upadacitinib has known side effects like infection risk.
