Smaller stent, bigger hope: new TIPS technique may cut brain fog risk

NCT ID NCT07349654

First seen Feb 01, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study tests a new way to place a stent (a small tube) in the liver to treat bleeding or fluid buildup caused by cirrhosis. The new technique uses a smaller balloon to keep the stent narrow at first, which may lower the chance of a brain complication called hepatic encephalopathy. About 72 adults with cirrhosis who need this procedure will be randomly assigned to get the standard or the new technique. The goal is to see if the new method reduces brain issues while still controlling liver problems.
