Simple cord milking procedure could save preterm Infants' lives

NCT ID NCT06240715

First seen Jul 13, 2026 · Last updated Jul 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial compares two ways of managing the umbilical cord right after birth in preterm infants (30-34 weeks) who are not vigorous. One method, umbilical cord milking, involves pushing blood from the cord toward the baby before clamping. The other is early cord clamping. The study aims to see if milking reduces the chance of death while the baby is still in the hospital. About 800 infants will take part across multiple hospitals.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

What this could lead to
If effective, this simple, quick procedure could lower the risk of death and complications in vulnerable preterm infants who are not vigorous at birth.
What could go wrong
The trial is still recruiting and results are not yet known. The procedure may not reduce mortality and could carry risks such as bleeding in the brain or infection.
