Sound waves to the brain: a new hope for Treatment-Resistant depression?
NCT ID NCT06085950
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study explores whether low-intensity ultrasound waves aimed at specific brain areas can ease symptoms in people with treatment-resistant depression. Thirty-two adults aged 18 to 75 who have not responded to at least two antidepressant treatments will receive personalized ultrasound stimulation. Researchers will measure changes in depression severity using a standard scale and monitor for any side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Transcranial ultrasonic stimulation prototype
What this could lead to
If effective, this could offer a non-invasive, drug-free option for people with depression that hasn't responded to standard treatments.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early pilot study without a placebo group, so results may not prove effectiveness. The approach is experimental and may not work for everyone.
