Fluid before surgery may speed up bathroom breaks

NCT ID NCT02443987

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether giving women intravenous (IV) fluids before tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) surgery for stress urinary incontinence helps them urinate sooner after the operation. 43 women took part, with some getting IV fluids and others not. The main goal was to see how long it took for the first urination after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Intravenous saline (0.9% Sodium Chloride)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could help hospitals decide whether to give fluids before TVT surgery to speed up recovery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 43 participants, so results may not apply to all women. It does not test a new treatment, just a routine practice.
