Shock therapy for cramps? tiny trial tests nerve zaps for period pain
NCT ID NCT07352982
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a non-invasive nerve stimulation technique, called transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS), can reduce pain and improve quality of life in women with primary dysmenorrhea (painful periods). Thirty-two women aged 20-25 will receive either TTNS plus standard painkillers or a placebo version plus painkillers for three sessions a week over four weeks. The goal is to see if adding TTNS leads to greater pain relief and lower prostaglandin levels.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) plus nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a drug-free add-on option to ease period pain and improve daily life for women with primary dysmenorrhea.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase study with only 32 participants, so results may not apply widely. The nerve stimulation is non-invasive, but the placebo group also gets standard painkillers, making it hard to separate the added benefit.
