Could a bad mood or infection trigger a major stroke? scientists investigate

NCT ID NCT06265155

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study aims to identify short-term triggers of acute ischemic stroke caused by large vessel occlusion, a severe type of stroke. Researchers will ask 302 patients about their exposure to potential triggers—such as infection, mood changes, smoking, alcohol, diarrhea, and extreme temperatures—in the year before their stroke and just before it happened. By comparing these time periods, they hope to pinpoint which factors may increase stroke risk in the hours or days prior.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If successful, this study could identify specific triggers that raise the short-term risk of severe stroke, helping people avoid them and potentially reducing stroke incidence.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It can only suggest associations, not prove cause and effect. Recall bias may affect results.
