Stroke hope: clot removal may work even days later

NCT ID NCT05326932

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether removing a blood clot from the brain up to 72 hours after a stroke can help patients recover better than standard care. About 336 adults with severe strokes due to a large vessel blockage will be randomly assigned to get the clot removal procedure or usual treatment. The main goal is to see if the procedure reduces disability three months later.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

mechanical thrombectomy (clot removal procedure)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could extend the time window for treating certain strokes, allowing more patients to benefit from clot removal even if they arrive late at the hospital.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively early-stage trial with 336 participants, so results may not apply to all stroke patients. The procedure carries risks like bleeding or vessel damage, and it may not improve outcomes for everyone.
