Nerve signals may guide better pain surgery for face shock pain

NCT ID NCT05738096

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether measuring nerve signals during a procedure called rhizotomy can help treat trigeminal neuralgia, a condition that causes sudden, shock-like facial pain. Researchers will test a monitoring technique in 30 adults already scheduled for the surgery. The main goal is to see if this approach is practical and could lead to better outcomes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials (TSEP) monitoring during rhizotomy surgery

What this could lead to

If successful, this could make rhizotomy surgery more precise and effective for trigeminal neuralgia patients.

What could go wrong

This is a very early feasibility study with only 30 people. It may not show clear benefits or be practical in routine surgery.
