Experimental drug triapine tested in rare uterine cancer before surgery

NCT ID NCT04494113

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-phase trial is testing the drug triapine in 12 women with a rare and aggressive type of uterine cancer called uterine serous adenocarcinoma. Participants receive a single dose of triapine before their scheduled hysterectomy, and researchers analyze tissue samples to see how the drug affects cancer cells. The goal is to understand if triapine can slow tumor growth, not yet to prove it works as a treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Triapine (a drug given intravenously that may block enzymes needed for cancer cell growth)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a new treatment option for uterine serous adenocarcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer.

What could go wrong

This is a very early (phase 0) trial with only 12 participants, so results are preliminary and may not lead to a proven treatment. The drug may also cause side effects like low blood cell counts.
