New device aims to prevent pneumonia in ventilator patients
NCT ID NCT06848010
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a device that automatically monitors and adjusts the pressure of the cuff on a breathing tube, keeping it at a steady 25 cmH2O. The goal is to see if this reduces leaks of fluids into the lungs, which can cause pneumonia. About 54 critically ill patients on ventilators will be randomly assigned to either the automatic device or standard manual checks every 8 hours.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Automated endotracheal cuff controller (device)
What this could lead to
If it works, this device could help prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia by reducing fluid leaks into the lungs.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 54 patients, so results may not apply widely. The device may not reduce infections or could have technical issues.
