Simple tongue workout may ease swallowing trouble after stroke

NCT ID NCT06072924

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a tongue endurance exercise program can improve swallowing in adults who have had a stroke. Seventy participants will be randomly assigned to either the tongue exercise group or a sham therapy group. They will do home-based exercises for 8 weeks and have swallowing tests and MRI scans before and after. The goal is to see if the exercises strengthen tongue muscles and change brain areas involved in swallowing.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

tongue endurance exercise

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, home-based exercise program to improve swallowing function after a stroke.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with only 70 participants. The sham group also does tongue exercises, so the real benefit may be small. Results may not apply to all stroke survivors.
