Magnetic pulses to the brain aim to quiet CRPS pain

NCT ID NCT03137472

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can reduce pain and improve thinking, mood, and physical function in people with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Forty adults with CRPS will receive either real TMS or a sham treatment for two days. Researchers will track how long any pain relief lasts and whether symptoms return to baseline.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) device

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a non-drug way to temporarily ease CRPS pain and related symptoms.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early-phase trial with only 40 participants and just two days of treatment. The pain relief may be short-lived or no better than a sham procedure.
