Jaw pain breakthrough? three injections tested after TMJ procedure

NCT ID NCT07479693

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether adding an injection of hyaluronic acid, platelet-rich fibrin, or dextrose to a standard jaw washout procedure (arthrocentesis) improves pain and jaw function more than the washout alone. Thirty-six adults with TMJ disorders who hadn't improved with other treatments took part. The goal was to see which, if any, of these add-on injections provides better relief.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Hyaluronic acid, injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF), and dextrose prolotherapy
What this could lead to
If one of these injections proves superior, it could offer a more effective, longer-lasting option for easing TMJ pain and improving jaw movement after a standard washout procedure.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 36 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The study compared several treatments, and none may be clearly better than the standard procedure alone.
