New personalized therapy aims to ease chronic jaw pain
NCT ID NCT04376333
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two behavioral treatments for temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), a common cause of jaw and face pain. 160 adults with long-term jaw pain will receive either standard dental care plus a highly individualized coping skills program, or standard care plus conventional cognitive-behavioral therapy. The goal is to see which approach better reduces pain, depression, and daily interference, and to understand how coping skills affect outcomes.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
cognitive-behavioral coping skills training
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a more personalized, effective way to manage chronic jaw pain and improve daily functioning.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage behavioral study. Results may not apply to all TMD patients, and the treatment may not outperform standard care.
