Could a diabetes drug also heal fatty liver disease?
NCT ID NCT06934642
First seen Jul 15, 2026 · Last updated Jul 16, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tests whether tirzepatide, a drug already used for type 2 diabetes and obesity, can improve markers of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) in people with obesity. Eight participants will take tirzepatide for 12 months and undergo blood tests and liver ultrasounds. The goal is to see if the drug reduces liver fat and stiffness, and improves metabolic health.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- tirzepatide, a medication used for type 2 diabetes and obesity
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could point toward tirzepatide as a treatment for MASLD in people with obesity.
