Could a simple ointment replace surgery for some skin cancers?

NCT ID NCT06112522

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether an ointment called tirbanubulin can effectively treat superficial basal cell carcinoma, a common type of skin cancer. Adults with small, previously untreated lesions on the body (not the face or scalp) apply the ointment once daily for five days. If the lesion does not clear, a second treatment course may be given. The goal is to see if this topical approach can safely eliminate the cancer without the need for surgery.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a non-surgical, at-home treatment option for certain superficial basal cell carcinomas.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase, single-center study with only 50 participants. The treatment may not work for all lesion types or locations, and side effects are still being evaluated.
