When to treat? new trial aims to optimize therapy for oligometastatic esophageal and gastric cancer
NCT ID NCT07000253
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This clinical trial is looking at the best timing for local treatments like surgery or radiation in people with esophageal or stomach cancer that has spread to only a few spots. All participants first get 4 months of standard drug therapy. Then, depending on their response, they are randomly assigned to either get local treatment right away or continue drugs for another 4 months before local treatment. The goal is to see which approach leads to better disease control and quality of life.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Chemotherapy (CapOx, FOLFOX, or SOX) combined with immunotherapy (nivolumab or pembrolizumab) and/or targeted therapy (trastuzumab or zolbetuximab)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors determine the best timing for local treatments like surgery or radiation, potentially improving disease control and survival for patients with limited metastatic cancer.
What could go wrong
This is a mid-stage trial with 290 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The treatments have known side effects like fatigue and nausea, and the study may not show a clear benefit for one timing strategy over the other.
