Thumb arthritis surgery showdown: new joint implant vs. traditional bone removal
NCT ID NCT07569549
First seen May 16, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 4 times
Summary
This study compares two surgical treatments for thumb base osteoarthritis: a new joint replacement (TOUCH prosthesis) and the standard trapeziectomy, where a bone is removed. About 84 adults aged 40-80 will be randomly assigned to one surgery and followed for 10 years. The goal is to see which provides better grip strength, less pain, and better value for the healthcare system.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
TOUCH Dual-Mobility Prosthesis (joint replacement device) and trapeziectomy (surgical removal of a bone)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that joint replacement is a better option than trapeziectomy for thumb osteoarthritis, offering stronger grip and fewer long-term complications.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 84 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Both surgeries carry risks like infection, nerve damage, or implant failure.
