Peer support after hospital stay may cut overdose and infection risk
NCT ID NCT06843213
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a program called THRIVE, where a trained peer (someone with lived experience) meets with patients in the hospital and sends weekly texts for 12 weeks after discharge. The goal is to see if this support helps reduce non-fatal overdoses and skin infections compared to just giving a resource handout. About 390 adults with opioid use disorder will take part.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- peer-led health resilience and promotion program
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could provide a simple, low-cost way to reduce overdoses and infections in people recovering from opioid use disorder.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage study with 390 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The program relies on peer support and text messages, which may not work for all individuals.
