Simple fluid drain may ease breathing in heart failure
NCT ID NCT07419360
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether removing fluid from around the lungs (a procedure called thoracentesis) can reduce shortness of breath in people hospitalized for heart failure. About 216 adults will either get standard heart failure medicines alone or medicines plus the fluid removal. Researchers will measure breathlessness and quality of life right after the procedure and again at 14 and 30 days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
thoracentesis (fluid removal procedure)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple, routine procedure to quickly relieve breathlessness in heart failure patients with fluid around the lungs.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (216 participants) testing a short-term symptom benefit. The procedure carries small risks like bleeding or infection, and the improvement may be modest or not last.
