Could a testosterone shot before surgery speed recovery?

NCT ID NCT04731376

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This early-phase trial is testing whether giving testosterone replacement therapy to men with low testosterone before and after major urologic surgery is safe and might improve recovery. Researchers will track quality of life, frailty, complications, hospital stay length, and readmissions in 56 participants. The goal is to see if this approach is worth studying further to help patients bounce back faster.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

testosterone cypionate (a form of testosterone given by injection)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple way to help men with low testosterone recover faster and better after major urologic surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small pilot study (56 people) focused on safety and feasibility, not proof of effectiveness. Testosterone therapy carries risks like worsening prostate issues or blood clots.
