Texting moms after birth could slash ER trips, new study hopes
NCT ID NCT06273436
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares standard postpartum care to a technology-based program called H.E.A.R. for Mamas, which uses text messages and phone calls to screen new mothers for complications. About 2,900 Medicaid-insured women in South Carolina will take part. The goal is to see if this approach reduces emergency department visits in the first six weeks after delivery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
H.E.A.R. for Mamas (text/phone-based screening and feedback)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that simple text/phone check-ins help catch postpartum complications early and reduce unnecessary ER visits.
What could go wrong
This is a large trial but still early in testing a behavioral intervention. Results may not apply to people without Medicaid or outside South Carolina.
