Tears may hold key to spotting dangerous prostate cancer

NCT ID NCT01514669

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares tears and blood samples from men with and without prostate cancer to find clues that separate aggressive from non-aggressive disease. Researchers aim to develop a simple diagnostic tool. 75 men aged 35-85 who are being checked for prostate cancer will provide samples at one clinic visit.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple, non-invasive test using tears or blood to identify aggressive prostate cancer early.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 75 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It's exploring possibilities, not proving a test works yet.
