Could a simple mist prevent repeat surgery for bleeding tonsils?

NCT ID NCT06580509

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 33 times

Summary

After a child's tonsils are removed, bleeding can sometimes occur and may require another surgery. This pilot study tests whether a nebulized mist of tranexamic acid (TXA), a medicine that helps blood clot, can stop the bleeding without needing to touch the surgical site. Twelve children aged 2 to 17 who experience bleeding after tonsillectomy will receive either TXA mist or a placebo. The study focuses on feasibility and how the medicine is absorbed, with the hope of reducing repeat surgeries and blood transfusions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Tranexamic acid (TXA) given as a nebulized mist

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a non-surgical way to stop bleeding after tonsil removal in children, reducing the need for repeat surgery or blood transfusions.

What could go wrong

This is a very early pilot study with only 12 children, so results are preliminary. The treatment may not effectively stop bleeding, and there is a small risk of side effects from the medication.
