New catheter lock could slash infection risk for cancer patients
NCT ID NCT02279121
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a taurolidine-citrate solution (TauroLock) placed in the catheter between treatments can prevent bloodstream infections in adults with solid tumors receiving IV anti-cancer therapy. 162 patients were randomly assigned to get either the TauroLock solution or standard saline. The main goal was to see how many catheter-related infections occurred in each group.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
taurolidine-citrate solution (TauroLock)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide a simple way to prevent serious catheter infections in cancer patients on IV therapy.
What could go wrong
This is a completed trial with 162 patients, but results may not apply to all cancer types or settings. The solution may cause side effects or not reduce infections significantly.
