Timing of pain block during Weight-Loss surgery may cut opioid use

NCT ID NCT04787367

First seen Jul 02, 2026 · Last updated Jul 02, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether giving a nerve block (TAP block) early during laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy reduces pain more than giving it later. About 200 adults having this weight-loss surgery will receive the same numbing medicine, but at different times. Researchers will compare pain scores and how much opioid painkiller patients need afterward.

What this could mean

Active substance

bupivacaine

What this could lead to

If early timing works better, it could improve pain control and reduce opioid use after weight-loss surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a single-center study with 200 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. Pain is subjective and other factors may influence outcomes.
