Quick quiz may spot alcohol risk in pregnancy without a blood test
NCT ID NCT04786587
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is checking whether a short self-report questionnaire called T-ACE can accurately identify pregnant women who drink alcohol at high-risk levels. About 2,425 pregnant women in three French hospitals will fill out the questionnaire and then give a blood sample to measure a biomarker of recent alcohol use. The goal is to see if the questionnaire is a reliable, non-invasive screening tool that could be used widely in prenatal care.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If the T-ACE questionnaire proves accurate, it could become a standard, quick tool to identify pregnant women who may need help with alcohol use.
What could go wrong
This is a diagnostic study, not a treatment trial. The questionnaire may not be sensitive or specific enough to replace blood tests, and results may not apply outside the study hospitals.
