Which surgery is best for hirschsprung disease? new study aims to find out
NCT ID NCT07468565
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Hirschsprung disease is a rare birth defect where nerve cells are missing in part of the colon, causing severe constipation. Surgery to remove the affected section is the main treatment. This study compares two ways to do that surgery: one through the anus only, and another using a tiny camera in the belly (laparoscopy) plus the anal approach. Researchers will look at medical records of 70 children treated at two French hospitals to see which method leads to better bowel function and fewer problems in the first year after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Swenson coloanal pull-through procedure (transanal or laparoscopy-assisted)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this study could help surgeons choose the best surgical method for children with Hirschsprung disease, potentially reducing complications and improving recovery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, retrospective study (70 children) that only looks back at past cases, so it cannot prove one method is better. Results may not apply to all hospitals or patients.
