Can better coordination save lives? VA tests intensive case management for veterans at risk of suicide

NCT ID NCT07534358

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a program called SUPERCEDE, which provides intensive case management to veterans who are at risk for suicide and receive care both from the VA and outside community providers. The goal is to improve care coordination, reduce suicidal thoughts, and improve daily functioning. One hundred veterans will be randomly assigned to either SUPERCEDE or a standard therapy (present centered therapy) to see which works better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Intensive case management (SUPERCEDE) vs. present centered therapy
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a practical, scalable way to reduce suicide risk and improve functioning for veterans struggling with mental health issues.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (100 participants) testing feasibility and effectiveness, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention is intensive and may not be sustainable in all settings.
