Grape seed extract and diabetes drug tested for prostate cancer side effects
NCT ID NCT02946996
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looked at whether a grape seed extract called OPC or the diabetes drug metformin could lower levels of AGEs (advanced glycation endproducts) in men with prostate cancer who are on hormone therapy. The trial planned to enroll 41 participants but was terminated early. The main goal was to see if these agents could reduce AGE levels by at least 30% in half of the patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
OPC (grape seed extract derivative) and metformin
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a way to reduce AGE levels, which might help manage side effects of hormone therapy in prostate cancer patients.
What could go wrong
This was a small, early-phase trial that was terminated, so results are limited. It is unclear if reducing AGE levels will have any meaningful benefit for patients.
