Could blood thinners stop a second stroke? new trial investigates

NCT ID NCT06486792

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at people over 65 who recently had a stroke with no clear cause. Doctors suspect they may have hidden atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) not caught in the hospital. The trial compares two treatments: a blood thinner (apixaban) or aspirin, to see which better prevents another stroke or blood clots. About 1,148 participants will be monitored for up to 12 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Apixaban (a blood thinner) or aspirin

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that using blood thinners early after a stroke of unknown cause reduces the risk of another stroke.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 4 trial, but the benefit-risk balance of blood thinners versus aspirin in this specific group is still unproven. Blood thinners carry a risk of bleeding.
