Can stress damage your arteries? new study investigates
NCT ID NCT06860724
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at how people's emotional reactions to daily stress relate to the health of their small blood vessels. Researchers will measure blood vessel function in the skin of 18 adults—some with depression, some without—using a mild drug that temporarily blocks a key blood-vessel chemical. The goal is to understand if stronger negative reactions to stress are linked to poorer blood vessel function, especially in people with depression.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
L-NAME (a drug that temporarily blocks nitric oxide production, applied to the skin)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could reveal how stress and depression harm blood vessels, pointing toward new ways to protect heart health.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early observational study (18 people) that measures only a temporary skin response, not long-term health outcomes. It may not apply to broader populations.
