Can a phone app reveal why some people handle stress better?
NCT ID NCT05498207
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study at the University of Michigan is recruiting 500 incoming freshmen to understand why some people are more vulnerable to stress while others bounce back easily. Participants will use a mindfulness app called Maya for 6 weeks, wear a Fitbit for a year, and provide samples and surveys over 12 months. The goal is to find biological markers of stress resilience that could one day help prevent stress-related disorders.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Maya App (mindfulness and stress management app)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help identify biomarkers that predict who is vulnerable to stress and who is resilient, pointing toward better prevention strategies for stress-related disorders.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage observational study with no treatment being tested. The results may not lead to any direct medical application, and the app's effect on stress may be small or inconsistent.
