Stem cell shot could save legs from amputation
NCT ID NCT05854641
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether injecting donor stem cells (Stempeucel) into the leg muscle can help people with critical limb ischemia, a severe form of peripheral artery disease. Ten Malaysian patients who cannot have surgery or angioplasty will receive the stem cells and be followed for one year. Researchers will measure changes in pain, ulcer size, walking distance, and amputation rates.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Stempeucel (donor stem cells injected into the leg muscle)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new way to reduce pain, heal ulcers, and prevent amputation in people with severe leg artery disease.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early feasibility study with only 10 patients, so results may not apply widely. Stem cell treatments can cause inflammation or other side effects.
