Pee power: urine stem cells may fix penile defects in kids

NCT ID NCT07495176

First seen Mar 28, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study tested a new approach to reduce complications in boys born with hypospadias, a condition where the urinary opening is on the underside of the penis. Researchers used exosomes (tiny healing particles) from the boys' own urine stem cells during surgery to help rebuild the missing spongy tissue. 82 boys were split into two groups; one received the exosome treatment and the other standard surgery alone. The goal was to see if the exosomes improve healing and lower the risk of fistulas, strictures, or curvature recurrence.
