Numbing injection may increase complication risk in Boys' genital surgery
NCT ID NCT07675798
First seen Jun 30, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial investigates whether a caudal nerve block, a common pain-relief method for children, increases the chance of a fistula (an abnormal opening) after surgery to correct hypospadias, a birth defect where the urine opening is on the underside of the penis. About 80 boys aged 6 months to 5 years will be randomly assigned to receive either general anesthesia alone or general anesthesia plus a caudal block. Researchers will track fistula rates, pain levels, and other complications over 3-6 months to guide safer surgical practices.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bupivacaine hydrochloride (caudal block)
What this could lead to
If results show caudal block increases fistula risk, surgeons may avoid it, reducing complications for thousands of boys.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (80 patients) that may not apply to all hospitals or techniques. The link between caudal block and fistula is still uncertain.
