Could a neck injection stop Post-Surgery heart flutters?

NCT ID NCT06271707

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Aug 11, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This pilot study tests whether a left-sided stellate ganglion block using bupivacaine can lower the rate of atrial fibrillation after esophagectomy, pneumonectomy, or lobectomy. 48 adults aged 18-85 undergoing these surgeries will receive either the nerve block or a saline placebo. The main goal is to see if the block reduces atrial fibrillation in the first week after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple injection to prevent a common heart rhythm problem after major chest surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 48 people, so results may not be conclusive. The nerve block itself carries rare risks like bleeding or nerve damage.
