New nerve block could make heart device surgery less painful
NCT ID NCT07165041
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a specific nerve block (SPSIP block) can reduce pain during and after surgery to implant a pacemaker or defibrillator. Sixty adults were randomly assigned to receive either the nerve block with numbing medicine or a sham injection. Researchers measured pain levels during surgery and up to 24 hours after, as well as sleep quality and satisfaction.

bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If it works, this nerve block could offer a simple way to reduce pain and improve sleep after pacemaker or defibrillator surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center study with only 60 participants. The sham group received a saline injection, which may not fully mimic a real procedure. Results may not apply to all patients.
