Wearable sensors could revolutionize how we track ankylosing spondylitis

NCT ID NCT05570656

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether wearable motion sensors can accurately measure spinal movement in people with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a condition that causes back pain and stiffness. Forty participants (20 with AS and 20 healthy volunteers) wore sensors while performing everyday movements like bending and walking. The goal was to see if these sensors could help doctors better track disease activity and mobility loss. The study is complete and focused on developing new measurement tools, not on testing a treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to better tools for diagnosing and monitoring ankylosing spondylitis using simple wearable sensors.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study focused on measurement, not treatment. The findings may not translate into widely used clinical tools without further validation.
