Simple breathing test may replace scopes for tracheostomy patients
NCT ID NCT07107243
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a speaking valve combined with a pressure measurement can predict if the upper airway is open in people with a long-term tracheostomy. 300 participants will wear the valve for 30 minutes while pressure is measured, then undergo a bronchoscopy for comparison. If accurate, this non-invasive method could replace the more invasive scope procedure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a non-invasive, simpler way to check if the upper airway is open in tracheostomy patients, reducing the need for bronchoscopy.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early diagnostic study, not a treatment. The test may not be accurate enough to replace bronchoscopy, and results may vary across patients.
