Scientists test how dialysis patients regulate sodium when given water or salt
NCT ID NCT06408077
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study looks at how the body controls sodium levels in people with end-stage kidney disease who are on dialysis. Researchers will give participants either water or a concentrated salt solution to see how their sodium levels change. The goal is to better understand hyponatremia, a common and dangerous electrolyte disorder, and improve treatment for these patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Water and sodium chloride (salt) solution
What this could lead to
If successful, this could improve how doctors predict and manage sodium imbalances in kidney patients, potentially reducing complications like brain swelling.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The interventions carry risks like fluid overload or rapid sodium changes.
