Tooth root 'Shield' may preserve bone for dental implants, 6-Year study finds
NCT ID NCT07171866
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This completed trial tested the Socket Shield Technique (SST), where a thin piece of tooth root is left in place after extraction to support the bone and gum around a dental implant. 25 adults needing a single front tooth implant were randomly assigned to get the implant right away or after a 6-month delay. Over 6 years, researchers measured bone changes and appearance to see which timing works best.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Socket Shield Technique (SST) - a surgical procedure where a thin piece of tooth root is left in place to support bone and gum after extraction
What this could lead to
If successful, this could confirm that the Socket Shield Technique provides long-lasting bone and gum support for dental implants, improving both appearance and function.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center trial with only 25 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The technique requires skill and may not work in all cases.
