Texting your way to better health: SMS reminders tested for prediabetes weight loss
NCT ID NCT06477900
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether adding SMS reminders with diet and exercise advice to a standard lifestyle program helps people with prediabetes lose more weight. 300 participants in Réunion will be split into two groups: one gets the standard program alone, the other also receives 72 text messages over several months. The main goal is to see if more people in the SMS group lose at least 3% of their body weight after 6 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- SMS reminders with physical activity and nutrition advice
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to help people with prediabetes lose weight and reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small trial testing a behavioral intervention, so results may not apply broadly. Weight loss can be influenced by many factors, and SMS reminders alone may not be enough for everyone.
